A Tough Loss in the Bronze Medal Game for the U11 Sting
It was another great weekend of baseball for our Beachin’ Saugeen Shores Sting U11 PWSA Girls’ team as they attended the Waterloo Ghost Invitational at the Bridgeport Sportsfield in Kitchener this past weekend.

The day started off overcast and cool as our young Sting team warmed up in preparation to face the Wyoming Lady Wranglers, but the sun soon emerged to warm things up including our bats. It was an exciting game with notable hits by Peyton Myatt, Maelle Wiles, Brynlie Wilcox, Avery Sachs as well as an impressive triple by Brooke Lamont and a 3 RBI hit by Janey Harris. Avery Sachs, Brynlie Wilcox and Peyton Myatt all took to the mound with stellar pitching with Peyton Myatt getting the win with a final score of 10 – 8 for our Saugeen Shores Sting team.

It was a real pitcher’s duel in the following game versus one of their host teams, the Waterloo Ghost U11 Black. Elliana Cameron started off on the mound with some strong pitching, surrendering zero runs on one hit over two innings and striking out six. The Waterloo Ghost came back with some exemplary pitching of their own allowing zero runs in two innings as well. Marissa Barfoot came in to pitch for two-thirds of the third inning, then was replaced by Brooke Lamont who led the team to victory by pitching one and one-third innings, allowing only one run on one hit, striking out three and walking zero. At the plate, Lane Topham led the way with two hits in two at bats in this nail-biter of a game, allowing our Sting team to defeat the Waterloo Ghost U11 Black team 2 – 1.

Fresh from their previous wins, our young athletes were ready to face the other host team, the Waterloo Ghost U11 Gold. Brooke Lamont started the game. The righty allowed three hits and two runs over two innings and striking out one. Lane Topham, Olivia Clark and Avery Sachs each collected one hit to lead the team at the plate. In the field, our girls were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error and Olivia Clark made the most plays including catching a fly ball, then throwing to second baseman Peyton Myatt for an impressive double play. At the top of the third, our young Sting team were up 3-2, when unfortunately, the Waterloo Ghost Gold found their bats as Avery Sachs took the loss surrendering four runs on three hits and one walk. Our Saugeen Shores Sting girls tried their best to rally back but were sadly defeated with a final score of 7 – 3.

The following day, our Beachin’ Saugeen Shores Sting girls arrived at Joe Thompson Field ready to play the Waterloo Ghost U11 Black in the Bronze medal match. Peyton Myatt started for Saugeen Shores. The right-hander went three innings, allowing only two runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking one. Isla Beith went two for two at the plate, including a fabulous dinger to the outfield to lead the team in hits. Our Saugeen Shores Sting team stayed in it until the end, giving it their all, but unfortunately, they fell in the fifth inning as the Waterloo team managed to score four runs against right-handed pitcher Brooke Lamont. In the end our Saugeen Sting team were defeated by the Waterloo Ghost U11 Black team with a final score of 6 – 4.

Although it was a tough loss, it was a great weekend for all and we look forward to watching them again at their upcoming Battle at the Beach tournament happening right here in Saugeen Shores! So, come on out to Cameron Park on June 10, 11 and 12 to catch some great baseball action from these up and coming young athletes.
