Oakville SummerSlam Silver Medalists
A silver lining for the Beachin’ U11 PWSA Saugeen Shores Sting girls’ team at the Oakville Summer Slam.

It was another glorious weekend as our Beachin’ PWSA U11 Saugeen Shores Sting team made their way to the city for the Oakville Summer Slam.

First up, was the Milton Bats Grey on Saturday morning. The game started well for our young Sting team as Brooke Lamont doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring a run and taking the lead in the first inning. But the Milton Bats battled back to even it up. It was a game of back and forth as the two teams kept trying to stay on top with multiple hits by Brooke Lamont and Elliana Cameron leading the team at the plate. A groundout in the fourth inning helped Saugeen Shores battle to an 8-8 tie with the Milton Bats Grey.

Immediately following their game versus the Milton Bats grey, our players took to the field again to face the Oakville Angels. It wasn’t a promising start as the girls gave up four runs to the Angels in the first inning, but in the top of the fourth the girls put up five runs with Avery Sachs, Brynlie Wilcox, Isla Beith, Peyton Myatt and Lane Topham powering up the inning with RBIs. Avery Sachs took the win surrendering one run on three hits over one and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one. Marisa Barfoot and Brooke Lamont entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. It was a huge game at the plate as our young players racked up 21 hits in the game with a final score of 20-5.

Right-handed pitcher Peyton Myatt took to the mound to start the next game against the Oakville Angels Senior team. Myatt threw some great pitches surrendering only one run on one hit over one inning and striking out three. Brooke Lamont and Avery Sachs entered the game in relief to help close out the game. At the plate, our Saugeen Shores team started racking up the runs in the third inning and never looked back. The offensive onslaught was led by Marisa Barfoot, Janey Harris and Lane Topham who all sent runners across the plate with RBIs and continued with multiple hits by Janey Harris and Brooke Lamont, who managed to sock one out to the outfield for a home run during the fourth inning. It was another high scoring game and another win for our Saugeen Shores Sting team with a final score of 19 – 5 against the Oakville Angels Seniors.

Sunday morning found the girls playing in the semi-final match against the tough Barrie Storm team in what could be considered one of their most exciting games so far this season. The game started innocently enough with Elliana Cameron starting in the pitcher’s circle and Barrie scoring 3 runs, then Saugeen Shores scoring 4 four runs after a walk by Olivia Clark, singles by Elliana Cameron and Lane Topham, a triple by Brooke Lamont and a groundout by Peyton Myatt. At the top of the third, Barrie managed to score a run despite some great pitching by Peyton Myatt to tie it up at 4-4. By the bottom of the third inning, Saugeen Shores had a four run lead thanks to a starting single by Avery Sachs, walks by Olivia Clark and Elliana Cameron, then Lane Topham was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run and then singles by Brooke Lamont and Peyton Myatt drove in 3 more runs. Everyone was feeling quite optimistic but the Barrie Storm team came back and scored three runs to make it a tight game once again at 7-8. Down by one run, the girls battled hard but were unable to score in the bottom of the fourth. Then Barrie scored two runs at the top of the fifth to take the lead and things looked pretty grim as the girls prepared for their last at bat of the game. Their perseverance and determination proved a winner as Janey Harris started off the bottom of the fifth getting on base, then stealing second. Shortly after, Elliana Cameron singled to bring Janey home to tie up the game at 9-9. Lane Topham was the walk-off hero who singled to right field bringing Elliana home and capturing the win to great cheers and applause from her teammates and a final score of 10-9 as well as a spot in the finals.

Shortly after their exciting semi-final match, our Saugeen Shores Sting team took to the field again for the gold medal game versus the Milton Bats 2011. Unfortunately, our Sting team struggled to put runs on the board due to some incredibly strong pitching from the Milton team, and had a tough time defensively containing them. During the fourth inning, the girls managed to put up three runs thanks to singles hit by Avery Sachs, Olivia Clark, Janey Harris and a triple by Brooke Lamont, but sadly the damage had already been done and Saugeen Shores weren’t able to recover and they lost to the Milton Bats 2011 with a final score of 14 – 3.

But all was not lost as the girls proved once again that they are true contenders with four wins out of five over the weekend and a silver medal to show for it!

If you’re in the Saugeen Shores area on Saturday, July 23rd, come on out to Cameron Park and cheer them on as they play the Cambridge Coyotes and the Chepstow Diamonds.
