The Beachin’ U11 PWSA Saugeen Shores Sting hosted the first tournament at their new facility, Lamont Sports Park, this weekend. The girls were fired up after their gold medal win the previous weekend and were ready to repeat!
Friday night saw them take the field against the Mississauga Majors, a team they faced last weekend. The Sting came out on top again, winning 6-1. Aadi Kidd, Avery Sachs, and Marisa Barfoot pitched for the Sting, combining for 10 strike outs and only allowing 2 walks and 1 hit. Avery Sachs went 3 for 3 at the plate, including a triple. The Sting scored 5 runs in the 5th inning to put the game away. The rally was started with a single by Julia Foster. Marisa Barfoot bunted for a base hit, Lundyn Carr and Avery Sachs singled, Lexi Gruberbauer added a double, while Camilla Cameron had an RBI.
Saturday morning the Sting met the Kitchener Klassics and got off to a quick start with a lead off homerun by Marisa Barfoot, who went 3 for 3 in the game. The Sting had 15 hits in this offensive outburst, winning 14-5. Lundyn Carr, Avery Sachs, Lexi Gruberbauer and Camilla Cameron all had multiple hits in the game. Addison Kuntz, Lexi Gruberbauer, and Julia Foster took the mound for the Sting, combining for 13 strikeouts.
The final round robin game was against the Cambridge Coyotes, another rematch from the previous weekend. The Coyotes came out looking for redemption. The Sting fell behind early allowing 5 runs in the first, and couldn’t come back. The Sting scored 3 runs in the 3rd with RBIs from Camilla Cameron and Marisa Barfoot. Lundyn Carr and Avery Sachs both had multiple hits. Lexi Gruberbauer and Julia Foster also had hits in this game. However, the Sting came up short losing 9-4. Aadi Kidd, Avery Sachs, and Marisa Barfoot shared the pitching duties combining for 10 strikeouts and only 4 walks.
The Beachin’ U11 PWSA Sting finished the round robin with a 2-1 record. In a tight pool, 3 teams tied with the same record. After the tie breaker, the Sting ended up second in their pool. This matched them up in the semi finals against a strong Aurora Diggers team, who finished first in their pool and dominated in all their round robin games.
The Sting capitalized on erratic Aurora pitching in the first inning, scoring 5 runs. Marisa Barfoot, Lundyn Carr, and Avery Sachs started off with walks, and then Charlotte Fitzsimmons singled in a run. Alison Thede was hit by a pitch, followed by more walks by Lexi Gruberbauer and Aadi Kidd. Julia Foster singled to cash in the final run of the inning. The Sting then held off the Diggers for a 6-4 win. Another strong performance by the Sting pitchers who faced some big Aurora hitters. Avery Sachs pitched 2 shut out innings to start the game. Aadi Kidd came into the game in relief for 2 innings, allowing 3 runs. Marisa Barfoot closed out the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings of work. These pitchers combined for 6 strikeouts.
The win against Aurora put the Sting into the gold medal game on Sunday morning against the Oakville Angels. The Sting got on the board early with singles from Marisa Barfoot, Lundyn Carr, Avery Sachs, and Charlotte Fitzsimmons, going up 2-0 in the first. The Angels got one in the 1st and another in the 2nd to tie the game at 2-2. The Sting went up 4-2 in the top of the 3rd with RBIs by Marisa Barfoot & Avery Sachs. But the Angels came out swinging in the bottom of the 3rd and scored 5 runs, putting them up 7-4. Addison Kuntz singled in the 4th and got home on an RBI by Lexi Gruberbauer, bringing the score to 7-5. Layla Zdunich had a long fly ball to left field in the 5th, but the Angels defence made an amazing catch. The Angels added two more runs in the 5th putting them up 9-5. The Sting battled back in the top of the 6th, adding 2 more runs to bring the game within two again 9-7. The Angels answered back with 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th, putting them up 12-7. The Sting got a rally going in the top of the 7th when Camilla Cameron singled and then scored on a single by Marisa Barfoot. Lundyn Carr singled, and Avery Sachs had an RBI ground out to bring the Sting to within three. The Sting’s rally came up short, falling 12-9 to a strong Oakville Angels team. Avery Sachs, Aadi Kidd, and Marisa Barfoot shared the mound for the Sting. The catching trio of Layla Zdunich, Alison Thede, and Camilla Cameron worked extremely hard blocking balls, holding base runners and supporting our pitchers. In the end, the Sting earned silver medals in a hard-fought game!
The Beachin’ U11 PWSA Saugeen Shores Sting have earned the respect and attention of other teams early in the season, with a gold and silver medal in their first two tournaments. It was a great weekend playing ball at home. Many teams and fans commented on what a great facility Saugeen Shores has and they are looking forward to coming back. As always, the coaches are very proud of these amazing ball players! Our next tournament will see the girls head to Tara the weekend of June 24th.
