The Beachin' U11 Sting with a Strong Start to the Season
The 2022 Baseball season began with sunny skies and warm weather in Brampton for our Beachin’ Saugeen Shores Sting U11 PWSA Girls’ team this past weekend, in a tournament hosted by the Brampton Blazers.

Unfortunately, the weekend got off to a disappointing start as the Barrie Storm team quickly earned a run in the first inning and multiple runs in the fourth. Despite great hits by Lane Topham and Penelope Martin, an amazing outfield catch by Isla Beith and a great effort from our pitchers, our U11 team weren’t able to catch up to the Barrie Storm for a tough loss with a final score of 8 - 3 for Barrie.

Determined to get a better outcome than the previous evening, the girls showed up on the diamond the following morning for their game versus the Vaughn Vikings ready to give it their all. The Saugeen Shores Team started strong with some excellent pitching from Elliana Cameron who allowed only one hit and two runs over two and a third innings and striking out five. The bats also came alive with hits by Elliana Cameron, Penelope Martin, Lane Topham, Brooke Lamont, Peyton Myatt and Olivia Clark. Peyton Myatt then came out strong to throw two and two-thirds innings in relief and recorded the last eight outs to earn the save for Saugeen Shores. With stellar pitching, great at bats, great catching behind the plate by Janey Harris and Maelle Wiles and 11 stolen bases, the Saugeen Shores U11 Sting team certainly gave it their all to pull off the win against the Vaughn Vikings with a final score of 6 – 4.

Buoyed by their win over the Vaughn Vikings, the Saugeen Shores Sting Team took on and easily did away with the Mississauga Lady Jays. Brooke Lamont started the game off on the mound allowing only one hit and two runs while striking out three. Then rookie pitcher Avery Sachs took over to earn the win with a stellar first performance on the mound. The righty allowed zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking zero. Marisa Barfoot and Brynlie Wilcox entered the game out of the bullpen with strong showings to help close out the game in relief. The bats were certainly alive during this game which started in the second inning when our Sting team pulled away for good with five runs in the second inning made by Penelope Martin, who singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs and Marisa Barfoot, who singled on a 2-0 count, scoring three runs. Our Saugeen Shores U11 Sting team solidified their win with multiple hits by Lane Topham, Penelope Martin, Marisa Barfoot, Olivia Clark, Avery Sachs and Elliana Cameron and committing no errors to earn a final score of 20 – 2.

Fresh from their win over the Mississauga Lady Jays, our young Sting team were ready to face the Brampton Blazers and they certainly did not disappoint. Peyton Myatt started the game off strong by allowing only one run to be scored in the first inning. The girls got things moving quickly at the plate with an amazing bunt by Olivia Clark, singles by Janey Harris and Brooke Lamont and a double by Elliana Cameron. Peyton Myatt was credited with the win for the Saugeen Shores team as the right-hander surrendered zero runs on three hits over two innings, striking out three and walking one. Marisa Barfoot and Avery Sachs entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. At the plate, Avery Sachs and Brooke Lamont each racked up multiple hits and our Sting team garnered another win with a final score of 15 – 1 to finish off the day.

It was a beautiful day for a ball game on Sunday morning, as the team took to the field for the semi-final match against the LaSalle Athletics. It was a tough battle both on the mound and at the plate with both teams giving it their all. Elliana Cameron started off strong but unfortunately, the LaSalle Athletics were able to score five runs in the second inning. Our Sting team managed to rally back with some hits of their own led by Olivia Clark and Elliana Cameron. As Peyton Myatt took to the mound, the LaSalle Athletics fought back hard and managed to score another five runs. Right-hander Avery Sachs then came in to finish the game. The Saugeen Shores Sting team had a huge come back in the fifth inning scoring four runs, led by a single from Elliana Cameron then a huge home run by Brooke Lamont. Sadly, their late game rally wasn’t quite enough and the Saugeen Shores Sting team took a tough loss to the LaSalle Athletics with a final score of 12 – 8.

All in all, it was a great opening weekend for our young team as they came in third overall and we look forward to watching them grow and hone their skills in the games and tournaments to come.
